It's not enough to make it easy to create your own social network! That is just creating another problem because as it becomes easier and easier to create social networks the more there will be and the more complicated it is for an end user to manage their interaction (profile info, content, interaction history) amongst all those social networks. None of these solutions address that problem. Zloop, at http://zloop.com
is the easiest method for creating your own social network, but more than that, it centralizes your interaction experience across all your zloop networks so that you don't have to manage each one separately. Try being part of two or three networks on Ning, then try being part of two or three networks on ZLoop, and you'll see the difference.

Concerning six groups there is a little difference worth a note. Six groups enables communities on websites with Livecommunity. We know that communities already exist on websites (look at this blog ;) ), we just have to make them visible. Enter the URL on http://sixgroups.com,
integrate 3 lines of code, and your own Livecommunity is ready.

I started a travel social network
http://www.euravelers.com
using Ning last month. I wanted more interactivity than my blog could offer so that travelers who want to see the real Europe beyond the usual tourist attractions could exchange tips and advice.
I've had a few people join but they just add their profile and nothing else. Social networks only work if a fair number of members add content. I'm not sure how to encourage members to participate.

Yes you're right- social networks work when there are communities of people interested in the theme of the network, ready to contribute and share.
The other thing is that your SN should have lots of communication opportunities! I mean good basis is also important. I just started with PG Social Networking Script. Looks nice- I'm sure I'll make my users active at a site with the set of features I have now!

Great article - I've never actually heard about the last three sites you've listed, but Ning is great. I used it to create http://www.getreeled.com,
which is a social networking site for fishermen and anglers from across North America
