Cheap Flyers a Low Tech Way to Advertise Local Social Networks

When social networking first started it was about building relationships across distances. Cyberspace was different than real space – bigger in some ways, smaller in others. And suddenly the Internet provided a practical way to do more than just find old school friends or people with common interests. You could actually sustain some kind of a relationship with them – even if you lived in Atlanta and they lived in Chicago (or Dubai).
Then oneday somebody woke up and realized that a social network didn't have to be a global network with a gazillion members. And suddenly people were forming social networks for every little hick town with a green and white sign.
There was one simple problem. How do you get the word out? Word of mouth does a lot to get people onto a local social network. I know Bob and Bob knows Bill and we both know Sue and Sue knows Mike and Rachael. But none of us know Tim or Zoe. Word of mouth only spreads so far. So what's next after word of mouth? Mass email marketing? Not very local. Newspaper advertising? Kind of expensive.
How about finding some nice flyer templates and printing up some cheap flyers? I know it sounds like a low tech option. But flyers can be placed strategically in a small community and they get a lot of bang for the buck. Put them out at restaurants and post offices. You'd be surprised at the number of people who will pick them up, take them home, and join the network…
