I don't understand why all those people don't just go to MySpace and set up a profile? Can anyone tell me?
I've been trying to contact some old friends for a few years. I don't want to pay to do it. I've been searching MySpace periodically using my high school name and finding a few here and there. Other's aren't there yet. They're listed in Classmates.com so I know they have Internet access. So why can't they seem to find MySpace?
Why would some people rather pay for Classmates.com then use MySpace for free?

When you pay for something it determines its value. MySpace has no real value and by saying that all you need to do is go to MySpace.com and compare its maturity and moral levels by what you see on it compared to Classmates.com which is much more professional and clean. I'm not fearful of my children viewing Classmates.com. My children would be scarred for life if they were to view MySpace.com.

I pay for classmates.com because many people in my generation (over 35) are not very internet savy and wouldnt know how to create a myspace account and set it up. There are a lot of people I would like to communicate with again who are too busy or just not informed on the new social networking communities. I personally have a myspace account and hope others my age will catch up soon. http://www.myspace.com/gingerwynn

Don't pay. I did and I regret it. In my opinion, there's almost zero value for the money, even for us old crocks.
I've found the free portion of Zaba is FAR more useful.

Wow, I can't believe how many people used this as an outlet to try to contact someone. That's less logical than Classmates.com.
I'm with Linda here. I've had several contacts via classmates and not a one has looked for me through facebook or myspace nor have I been able to find them.
It doesn't take any more saavy to use myspace and facebook than it does to use classmates so that theory is just wrong. As far as maturity? That's also a farce. You set your corner of the social networking world up the way that fits you. It doesn't matter if teens have party pics and bubbly graphics. It doesn't matter if they have music and video. You only have to have what you want and there is nothing that makes you connect with those. I guess to some people paid = mature. And to some extent, I guess I understand that belief since paid = you have a credit card. By-and-large, that assumption is wrong.

Classmates.com is good if you are looking for someone who has changed their surname due to marriage. At classmates.com they indicate their birth surname as well as their married surname. So if you search for Jane Doe and her name is now Jane Jones, you will find her at classmates.com. Not sure if that would work elsewhere.

I try to discriminate what I think and what I know, many people don't. These are the facts: First, many older people are not "fluent" in computer usage. Sure, their jobs require tome to operate a keyboard and a few program basics. Many don't really understand any more than what they are trained to do. Example: Thousands of people can install rivets, nuts and bolts, but how many of those that built a rocket could send it to the moon? It's like trying to get grandma to use a cell phone. She wants 10 numbers, a send and end button. Second: Where is the first place you are going to look for a "classmate"? I can't properly give the credit to the first person who said "location is everything", but if you own the domain name that follows a train of thought, you're on your way.

The comments by Karen: "When you pay for something it determines its value. MySpace has no real value and by saying that all you need to do is go to MySpace.com and compare its maturity and moral levels"....
Paying for something does not determine its' value as far as words go. writing to friends using email is free. I do not like Classmates.com for the same reasons stated Linda Roeder at the top of the page that is why all of my friends are going to FACEBOOK.COM.
With myspace it depends the person writing on what language is used or moral compass they direct their writing, not the actual site.
So go to facebook it's free and very popular!!!

I just went on classmates.com for the first time and found it not to be worth the money. I also don't like myspace either cause like my 14 year old son who I caught lying about his age to get on the site. There is suppose to be a minimum age on that site and anyone can go on there and lie about their age and anything else.

I'm looking to start a class action law suit against Classmates.com
I never use this site, but signed up for a Gold membership to contact friends a couple of years ago, having used
the site for free since 2003 or so. They had my card on file and charged it without telling me in advance they
would (either by postal mail, email or a phone call or notice at all), claiming that when you sign up online you
agree to have them auto-renew your account. I ensured my account was set to manual, so it wouldn't renew. They
did it anyway without notice. I saw a pending transaction on my online bank account. I called them and explained
that I didn't agree to this and didn't want to be forced to have another two years of this service. They said "Too
bad, your card has been changed, we don't refund". I filed a charge back with my bank and credit card company
(Chase/MasterCard) and Classmates disputed it saying I agreed, per their terms.
I DO NOT want this service, they are charging me BEFORE I have the service, and I TOLD them that I DON'T WANT it,
but this is how they make their money, by forcing people to renew, even if you didn't set it to renew or agree, nor
be notified they would. Then they tell your CC provider that you agreed to their terms so you don't get CC
protection. They can steal your money if you ever sign up. They don't even have an option to cancel your account
if you want, so they tell your CC company that you have an "active account" with them, and use that to justify the
charge for the "membership renewal", and your CC company will say "You have an active account and per their terms,
you have it auto-renew". I did NOT, however! Even IF I did, that's for ease of future payments, and it's not
supposed to be a way to FORCE you to use their service! It's ridiculous, because there's NO way to PROVE you
didn't go in and set it to manual so it wouldn't auto charge your card without any notice to you.
Even IF you made a mistake and forgot, it's sleazy as hell for Classmates to take the money and FORCE you to use
their service, when you tell them you don't WANT the service before you even use it. It's your RIGHT to change
your mind or refuse the service or product BEFORE you get it or are sent it, or use it. This is a complete scam,
they bank on making money from people forgetting or from their system glitch that doesn't HOLD ONTO the last
selection to NOT auto-renew. Scum bags! I'm looking to start a class action law suit, as they are likely making
millions from all of the users having this happen. How many people were FORCED to have another year or two
membership that didn't want it, and didn't select Auto-renew for their CC on file!?
What's stop stop ANY site from charging you randomly for a service you don't want and just claim you agreed to it?
They should happily and promptly reverse the charge, but they clearly make the bulk of their money from this from
what I'm seeing. You have no way to prove otherwise! I run sites, I know how it works, and any site could then
just rip you off and you'd have no recourse. They can't get away with this. It's like saying you ordered a stereo
from an online site and two years later they send you a new stereo and charge you. You don't accept it because you
NEVER agreed to it, and they say "Too bad, the stereo is yours and we've billed you!" What's to stop that from
happening, just because at one point two years ago you did agree to buy the stereo?
This is ridiculous, it's a way to have them FORCE you into having an account at this worthless site. Classmates is
a joke, hardly anyone uses it and they are desperate enough to rip off clients by putting terms that force you to
renew and you can't dispute the charge? There's no way for me to prove I didn't select to NOT auto-renew, so
Classmates has ripped me off! I'm looking to start a class action law suit to expose this scam they are running, so
if this has happened to you, please contact me at tim (at) chatbase (dot) com. I'm spreading the word. Thank you.

One of my frens were asking me, of a picture he had in his wallet. Have you seen this gal?... a 1990 prom picture. I know others told me she has family, but I wonder where she is... we wonder where she disappeared too. This gals name as we knew her, maybe her maiden name if married by now- Rosella Bahe. She is not listed on the list, on classmates.com .
If Classmates.com came popular in their own way, they should make it better than any other site without no fee's to pay... should be all FREE. Otherwise, seems that classmates.com is DEAD here..., and I really think that classmates.com should really do alot of homework- they UPDATE everyones profile etc.
Everything is not safe ONLINE, its all the same... Especially those that scamm for pictures & monies etc ; they should have it where its like nearly facebook- you need approval to be a fren. Otherwise, I think the .com place needs to update, cause I met maybe half or 1/3 of my old classmates and their MARRIED. So they need to do some works on their classmates.com pages; how in the heck are you suppose to find classmates...when their under old names?

I understand some of the frustrations on this blog and yes it is a backhanded and sneaky way to do business. This is very simialr of radio shows barking creams and lotions that offer free trials. They get your card number and you find out next month they billed you for additional months supply of the stuff when you did not agree. On the other hand why would they make it free. It seems there are a ton of people on computers these days that think everything is or ought to be free. Sorry but this is a capitalist society and just like ever business they are in business to make money. Nothing wrong with ath at all. After all they designed the site, thought of the site, patented the site and maintain the site which does cost money. A lot of people think it must not have cost them anything to build the business because its on the internet. Not so. Again I don't agree at all with the way they handle their accounts and they should be forced to change it. If they were more honest about that part of their business it might have a better reputation. But don't expect everything for free. Its a business. Just some thoughts and trying to balance it all out.
