Cliques, Wave of the Future?

Cliques, Wave of the Future?

Tech Trends IV — Feb 26 — "When humans first walked the Earth they lived in individual family units, eventually families came together to form villages, towns and then cities. In building communities on the net, we are doing the opposite." FULL ARTICLE

I disagree that we are doing the opposite. After we evolved into communities we moved onto the next level which is segregation. There are different clicks and groups in our society. My son is into bicycle racing. The people that do cycling and bicycle racing are their own little click in society. Cyclists see the roads different than non-cyclists. That's just one example.

Our society is full of cliques and groups and is broken down by interests, sports, careers and other things. Social networking sites are doing the same thing because it's human nature. As much as we tell ourselves we are all one group and we go out day by day and try to convince ourselves of that, deep down we know it's not true. When you come across someone who's not part of your own level of society most people tend to think of them differently.

You associate with people with your own interests in life. If you come across someone with the same illness that you have you bond with them instantly. It's the same way online. After all, people are people whether they are on the Internet or not.

Cyclists will want to join cycling groups, kayakers lovers will want to join kayaking groups, knitters will want to join knitting groups. Even on the Internet.

You’re absolutely right in saying that accountants and cyclists don’t want the same thing in a social networking site, being both I can really say that. Every niche will want something different and that’s why I like these specialized social networking sites. Also, accountants will go to the accounting site to talk about accounting issues. You can’t do that on MySpace.
