Friend: the word already covered a pretty broad semantic piece of ground. Then came Facebook, and it made the term even more nebulous.
I have 38 friends on Facebook - including my two daughters, a couple of other relatives, former co-workers from past jobs, some high school friends I haven't actually seen since Carter was President, some colleagues I work with in cyberspace (but will likely never meet), etc. They're my "friends."
Pamela Newton had an entertaining piece recently on friendship and Facebook. She looks at the question: "What is a Facebook friend really worth?" She puts the question in an emotional context (which is probably appropriate for talking about actual friendships). And she comes up with one of the best descriptions I've every heard of what good Facebook really is...

Having "friends" on Facebook, or MySpace is a new age trend that has so much potential!
Essentially, these tools are teaching our World how to network at a rapid pace that has never before been seen in the history of social networking.
Gathering buisness cards for your address book, suddenly seems so dated and it looks as if we are going to be making contacts on social networking sites for decades to come....the thing about it is, how many niches can you come up with to market YOURSELF, and target OTHERS that are key to your success?
This is rhetorical, but the truth is that there are so many sites out there for already exhisting niches (and many are so general), so why don't you just make your own social network and see how many people you can attract that are all ready looking to be on your team?
I believe that I have a solution for this, and I would love to take the time to share...if you are interested.
Social Network Empire; aka, SNE and SNEmpire is a powerful tool.
I went for it and purchased this product two months ago with a little counseling from my good friends Marc Horne and Hollis Carter.
These two innovative marketing consultants, have developed a really useful program package that allows users to create their own social networking sites. The template, similiar to facebook, comes equipped with software, tech support, educational webinars, and additional graphic options.
This program is hot! And you can customize your site to fit and target any niche with ease. The possibilities are endless and I reccommend jumping on the SNEmpire bandwagon, before your ideal niche is taken by someone else.
It all started back in September, when I moved out to Breckenridge, Colorado. I needed some change and I suppose my two friends (now partners) did too.
During the thirty-something hours, that it took to drive from Atlanta to the Rockies, Hollis, our old friend Trevor, and I all discussed what we wanted to do with our lives. When It came time for Hollis to share his plan, he confidently told us some pretty sweet secrets about how he was going to continue to make a solid income from new-age and cutting edge, internet marketing strategies (IMS).
We had some laughs and good times on that trip out here, but what I left with is now my life, my passion, and my bread.
Great Information and superb product.
Social Networking is serious.
Okay... sorry to ramble and tell long stories. If you guys have any questions about how it all worked out, let me know:

The comments of the summer camp director are very true. Our kids go to camp each summer and return filthy dirty, with bug bites, sunburns, scrapes, bruises, and once a broken finger. But for a month, there is no electronic entertainment, nobody is babying them, and they have the freedom and authority to plan their days with much less structure than in school. There is much more tolerance for rough-housing than in the feminized Ritalin dispensaries our schools have become. They return happy, enthusiastic, and with visibly increased maturity and self-confidence.
