Gaining Twitter Followers: The Science of the ReTweet

Dan Nichols at has a neat piece on the science of retweeting.

Twitter has become hot in the business world. Sure, you can tweet pictures of your cat attacking your wife's printer or your feelings about Kentucky losing and messing up your brackets in the office pool. But a number of professional communities have developed retweeting into a science – passing on business tips, news, information and more.

What you should keep in mind is that retweeting can also get you follower. You write a good blog post or find an important news article, so you send it to your followers with a request that they retweet it. One of your followers, John, retweets it (sends your tweet on to his followers). One of his followers, Bob, finds it very useful. The retweet has your name on it and (after seeing five or six useful retweet from you) Bob decides he doesn't want to rely on John's retweets so he signs up to follow your himself.

Retweeting gets you followers.
