Getting Users to Compete
Noah Kagan has an interesting post about a new Linkedin feature. Linkedin has implemented a rating system which gives each user a rating based on how complete their profile is. My profile is 45% complete. I haven't leveraged linkedin much to my advantage, so I don't feel too compelled to increase my completion score. But, Noah thinks otherwise:

I think this is a brilliant trick as we are all inclined to succeed. When we were in class NO ONE wants to get a C. We hopefully all want to succeed and get at least an A-. Connection? If you see that 50% on your profile what are you going to do about it? I think you are so much more likely to go do the required things till you make that grade.

I don't see ratings on other people's profiles as a I browse Linkedin, but it'd be interesting to see other people's ratings. The only way most social networks rate users is by 1) the number of friends collected and/or 2) ratings from other users. It'd be cool, however, as niche social networks become more common to have ratings of users based on different metrics.
