How AIMPages Happened.

How AIMPages Happened.

The other big news for the week. Actually, I think this will prove to be bigger news. Is that AOL launched AIMPages. AIMpages is AOL's foray into social networking. But, instead of launching another friend aggregator, AOL is building a social networking platform by leveraging their huge and largest instant messenger network. So, that's smart.

What's even smarter is how AOL is building the social network. They've contracted Marc Canter's Broadband mechanics to build widgets that users can easily put on their page. Of course, every site that's smart builds flash widgets that can be embedded into myspace pages. But, this is certainly a way to make it a little easier for users to accomplish the same task.

What's even more unique, Jason Calacanis didn't take credit for this one, as he's been taking credit for not only a few launches since he's been absorbed by AOL, but changing the corporate culture.

AOL certainly seems to be doing some smart things. Credit where credit is due: Marc and Jason are playing a role. It'll be interesting to see how things proceed. Oh to be a fly on the wall.
