Is Buzz Marketing a Fad ?

One of the big promises of Web 2.0 applications is to make Buzz Marketing the Next Big Thing on the Internet.
The most prominent Thought Leaders of this vision are: Bzz Agent, Modern Marketing, Church of the Customer Blog, Robert Scoble and Seth Godin.
However, there is a cloud in the horizon.
Marketing Guru, Jack Trout has just written an article in Forbes Magazine with a very pessimistic view about this new Word of Mouth techniques. He says:
"How many people really want to chatter about products? Do you really want to talk about your toothpaste or your toilet paper? Even people with prestige products tend not to chatter about them. All you really want is to be seen driving up in one. Now, if it's a harley
Davidson motorcycle, sure. That's because you're part of a club, and that's all they talk about. But they don't need buzz."" Buzz can get your name mentioned but you can't depend on much else. Not too many mouths will do a stand-up commercial about your product vs. its competitor. Nor will they check with you in advance on what to say."
Well, let`s check the facts:
If companies and organizations are able to design a great product, iPod, provide us something WOW to share, Carl's Jr Paris Hilton, build a cool virtual community to interact, My Space, give us the opportunity to change something, OhmyNews (Politics in South Korea), let our voices to be heard, Slashdot and consolidate a movement,
Spread Firefox (Open Source), maybe, just maybe the magic of Buzz Marketing can work.
