Is social networking healthy?

Is it a sad commentary on life when many people report that their best friends are online connections - people they have never met? At one time I would have been shocked by this, but not anymore. When I have friends online that I have never met, that I talk to more than the real people around me every day, I just wonder how I changed so quickly.
What is it about the anonymity of the internet that has fostered this global connection that has significant importance in people lives? I have an internet friend that I am concerned about right now. We speak every day, rain or shine - it doesn't matter online. And not only do we speak every day, we speak several times a day. Yet I didn't hear from him yesterday…in fact, I have not heard from him since he sent me an email from a pub he was at on Friday night.
Do you have friends on the internet that you feel more close to than with you flesh and blood friends that you see all the time? What are your thoughts on this phenomenon? I would love to discus this further.

I have several friends that I've met online that I feel closer to than 'real life' friends. As a visual artist I spent a lot of time in my studio so 'real' friendships can be difficult to sustain. So I've found that the people who know the most about me are people I social network with. Most of them are on the social networking art site I'm a member of, www.myartspace.com, and Facebook. It has its down falls, but online friends are almost always online when you need them. lol

I think social networking is really healthy. You get to know new people and you get knowledge about different things of your interest. I think social networking has really changes the world and it have reduced the differences among various cultures and countries.

This is a great title and discussion. People should really know if Facebook is healthy or not because of its fast growing popularity in any age group. But frankly speaking it really depends on the user of Facebook how how will he or she socialize using Facebook. Because as far as Facebook applications are concerned, there are a few applications that is not that healthy to the society but again, it will depend on the user on how he or she will absorb it.
This is a great article! Keep it up!

I think this is a really interesting topic. Wit the evolution of social networking I don't think its a question of 'if' it's going to change the way we connect with one another, but more 'how'.
At the end of the day, we are connecting with people more then ever. And some might feel that the relationships are more 'superficial', but there's nothing superficial about meeting new people around the world from these sites. We can also keep in touch with friends from our past and reconnect with them.
I saw a 5 year old girl using the computer the other day... now that was impressive and a reconfirmation that this new way of interacting with friends is here to stay :)
My 2 cents, cheers,
Taigh
