Miserable Misanthropes

Miserable Misanthropes

"Perhaps I misunderstood, but I thought the internet was a place where miserable, antisocial misanthropes could hide from the real world and occasionally make contact with other miserable, antisocial misanthropes in order to say something cutting." ~Shiny Shiny, a girl's guide to gadgets (May 14)

I'll tell you why this post was so interesting to me. Years ago there was a fear that the Internet was taking our world's teens and turning them into antisocial zombies. We were told not to get on the Net for more than an hour a day or we would forget how to be social and would turn into the kind of people who lurk around but never talk to anyone, only going out for food if necessary and sitting in the dark with online the glare of the computer to keep us company.

That's not what happened, is it? The Internet turned into one of the most social medias ever invented. Now you can keep track of and communicate with dozens of people all at once with the click of your mouse.

She is right though. People who are "miserablists" are attracted to the Internet. They're here too, they've been here all along. and they just want to do their thing and be left alone.
