Using Social Software

Marc Canter quotes a clueless quote by Steve Rubel about myspace gaining on the blogosphere. Steve says:
For sure the b'sphere will continue to remain the largest galaxy in the social media universe in the short term. It's a major center of gravity that pulls people toward it. However, over the last few months a number other social media galaxies have rapidly risen to prominence. Take YouTube, digg and MySpace. These are just three examples, but they are drawing huge audiences. Richard Edelman is gushing over a fourth - StupidVideos.com.
A little advice. Don't ASSUME. It makes an ASS of you and me. First off, myspace has been HUGE and GROWING for a lot longer than a few months. Hell. They were HUGE and ACQUIRED before a few months ago.
Secondly, I don't buy the statement that the blogosphere will remain the largest galaxy of the social media universe. There is certainly no way of defining the blogosphere, but it's probably safe to assume that myspace is part of it, given that they host millions of blogs. Myspace also already receives more trafic than the largest hosted blogging site, blogger.
I know that PR people have a need to explain and put this stuff in tidy packages for their not so clued-in corporate clients, but let's start reading more than ourselves, Steve. Your conclusions might benefit from some less blogosphere-in-bred perspectives.
