Spam and Social Networking Sites

On SpamI recently got invited to Orkut and decided to try it out. I haven't seen the MAJOR SPAM there that I see at MySpace. I'm getting friend invites right and left, and most of them are MLM or affiliate ads stuffed into a MySpace profile.
So, what are the ways today's sites that aren't bombarded with half-naked teens or Viagra ads doing to combat this spam-phenomena?
Combating SpamOrkut is invite only, so chances are, spammers will take longer to finally receive an invite. I suppose the spam issue will not be seen here for quite a while. This strategy is similar to Memeorandum and Gmail (another Google company). Shoot, if a sweet reader hadn't invited me, I wouldn't even be on there.
Mooble is mostly European right now, though the numbers are really snowballing on this site. I suppose when they release Mooble 2.0 it will get out of control there too (sidenote: I am doing marketing work for Mooble, so if you are interested in checking Mooble out, please let me know you're a reader of this blog and add me as a friend at mooble.com/duzins).
Tagworld is an interesting concept too. I like the feature integration with your IM clients, though I think they will all have that in the next 2-3 months.
Meetro and Meebo have this feature as well, and Bebo integrates Skype. Of course, any long-time blogger knows Skype buttons have been around quite a while (see my personal blog's use of the Skype button at sleepyblogger.com).
One User Can Be A Member Of Dozens Of SitesYeah, there's a great bunch of sites out there, but I'd caution you not to get tied too deeply to any one company. I have a MySpace page (http://myspace.com/athomemama), a Mooble page (http://mooble.com/duzins), a YouTube page, an Orkut page, a LinkedIN page (http://linkedin.com/in/robyntippins) and even a few private, invite-only, not publicized pages that are pretty cool too.
I use them all and will often link from one to another. My contacts migrate back and forth amongst the different sites.
Trouble In Social ParadiseWhen MySpace began blocking YouTube and Revver, the online world had a conniption. One thing I've pointed out all along is that you'll never win by blocking people out. In fact, you'll end up becoming the evil empire
(ala pre-Scoble Microsoft). No site, even one as big as MySpace can take the negative PR of being the evil empire. Open ideas, open platforms and the ability to migrate across different sites is key to keeping all of our options open.
Social Networking 2.0? Identity 2.0? Or, more likely the musings of a sleep deprived blogger with a need to connect...
