CNN seems to think that Facebook could soon become a content portal of sorts. Why? The capacity for managing micropayments.
Facebook is establishing itself as the purveyor of numerous digital transactions. When a Facebook friend has a birthday, users are encouraged to spend $1 on a gift, posted to their profile page for all to see.
As people like Rupert Murdoch look around to ways to make their content a nickel and dime (up front) proposition, Facebook stands out for its ability to handle those nickels and dimes.

It remains to be seen whether Murdoch will ever actually make the move to paid content. But if he does, Facebook stands to become even more popular.
